Jim Jarmusch is back...
with new film being released March 3rd, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, starring Forest Whitaker.
Marriage proposals accepted 'til 11:45 PM PST
dumbmonkey is a very good cook, a handy fellow w/tools of all persuasions, has his own nice little casita in N.CA, good conversationalist, avid movie-goer & lover of fine independent bookstores. He be kinda cute too (but then again, not especially objective about this) & particularly fond of smart, independent women who drive pick-up trucks & are game...
for your perusal, here's someone that has to love their job.
"hey, at least i'm in show business"

2.28.00

"oh, what I do for England..."
Hmmmmmm, is that a feather in your bonnet or are you just happy to see us?
i want Ben Stein's Money!
& while i'm at it i want a piece of that wiseass Kimmel kid, too...
more Stein&Kimmel stuff here

Un Feliz Cumpleanos
a la Mama de J. Kottke..
a hint of spring in the air, after a night of storm & rain...
stayed indoors during a windy, rainy night, and caught most of a beautiful film courtesy of my cable co. & these folks . another instance of serendipity, & altho i missed the beginning i was compelled to watch the remainder of this film. having enjoyed the story so much, i went here to discover more about it, of which i found just a wee bit of information, then googly-searched and found this, again, still very little information. It is a lovely film, beautifully shot, w/a marvelous soundtrack, and had i more presence of mind i would have fired up my ATI-AIW Pro & saved some images to share with you. dumbmonkey once managed a video store in Berkeley, & we were very proud of our collection of world & independent films on tape, this is one that would have fit right in, perhaps you may have the opportunity to see it somewhere, someday.

much ado about Eggers
courtesy of the esteemed obscure store
just a friendly reminder....
candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker...

2.25.00

a tip of the old red fez to:
the charming Allison for pointing me to Benjamin's never-ever.
musing upon the theme of TomFoolery...
dumbmonkey presents to you The Globe-Guardian
along w/a gentle reminder that in this world of tanyas, darvas, multi-millionaire losers & dumb-as-a-post presidential candidates, it is important to maintain a sense of humor...

2.24.00

Serendipity
myowndamself is using ie5 & AV as primary search via addresswindow, i typed in "lives of quiet desparation" ( yesssss, i KNOW it's mispelled, OKAY?.... please follow dear Jessamyn's advice & go fly a kite on a beach somewhere, preferably FAR away...) and i went immediately to the fifth link & after dutifully inspecting quality of content (fuck the design, if aguyzagottasomtinktosay datzawatzagonnakachamyeyz) so i clicked in the addr wndw, found LSHP & was scared for a minute 'cause it said enter at my own risk, you know? and then...
i was reminded of when i visited this guy's 2.23 & then this one's 1:10/2.24 earlier today, and then i had to smile 'cause there was that gif of
dave hissowndamnself, with that little popup asking
"Uuuhhhh... yuh like canned ham?"
Some more about a dangerous job
altho this link is for a comm'l website, there is an engrossing tale on the first page
& here are some statistics that speak to the dangers of the occupation
Once upon a time, dumbmonkey ventured north
to seek his fortune in the waters around the Aleutian Islands, hoping to luck into a position aboard an Alaskan crabber during the heyday of the King & Tanner crab fisheries. Although never getting that job, the experience was memorable nevertheless, and finding this article on the crabbers along California's north coast brought back memories of working alongside fishermen (i ended up as foreman on a processor for Alaska-Shell seafoods) & recalling their tales of hazardous duty in a tough job.

2.20.00

dumbmonkey has few regrets these days, but does regret missing
Dave Eggars visiting the Bay Area a couple of weeks ago. methinks sharing a cross country train ride w/Mr. Eggars would be an enjoyable experience, as long as i could hold up my end of the conversation, as i don't believe Mr. Eggars would have any problem holding up his. and shame on you if you aren't already regularly visiting McSweeneys

2.18.00

hottdamn! Mo' monkey business!!!
There's a monkeybagel.com (i likes mine toasted & garlicky w/a lox schmear), & credit to Kestrel's Nest for pointing that out. Tip o'the red fez atop my head to those Bird on a Wire types who pointed me to this link , but i gotztotellya, it VERY DOUBTFUL any monkey be doing that kind of swimming,
even us DUMB ones...
credit where credit's due...
a tip of dumbmonkey's red fez to Mr. J.A., of Jauteria for his assist in the reduction of dumbmonkey confusion re eligibility of MAGNOLIA in this years Oscar contest. And muchas gracias, tambien, to another source (who'll remain unnamed at this time) for the link to Oscar rules ( no he doesn't!!)
and the list of eligible '99 releases for "distinguished achievement".
to hell w/the Oscars anyway, at least 'til dumbmonkey gets an invite...

2.17.00

as i approach my silverback years...
i occasionally have a leeeetle trouble w/recalling things, like where a particular link came from, or who that stranger is i found sleeping next to me this morning (oh, but that's another entry for another day). i believe mr. west's page has undergone a large amount of modification since i first ran across it (some of my links are as hoary & grey as i) and i recommend it as an excellent reference resource for those w/a literary bent & time on their hands & besides, anyone linking to mortimer adler or anthony burgess on their site is OKAY by me...

2.16.00

when I flow, I know, you go, like, whoa!
such a clever girl!
vive la mouchette...
there are 100 links hidden there

2.15.00

before i call it a night...
please correct me if i am mistaken, but isn't magnolia a 2000 release, & not eligible for Oscar contention? then was Cruise's award at the Golden Globes sort of a European "Atta Boy!" or what? dumbmonkey definitely clueless here, but expect to see American Beauty finish strongly at that evening's festivities...

Hail to the staff of the Berkeley High Jacket
those darn kids are doing it again. Refer to the earlier note courtesy of Cholly K. & the gang at the Hotsy Totsy Club, then go to this link to see what those smart young whippersnapppers are up to now. More evidence that youth is our greatest resource, and we usually don't do them justice...
ahh, to have reveled in the irony of Jessamyn's tee-shirt...
waaaaaay back on 2.4 we made mention of an appearance of poet Czeslaw Milosz in Berkeley. Turns out this is part of a SERIES of lunchtime readings being held on the Cal campus on the first Thursday of every month during the academic year.
re BACKSTAGE at LATE NIGHT w/David Letterman;
this is the weeks list of guests & guest hosts. News is Dave hisowndamnself is expected back on MONDAY, on a part-time basis, backed up by some guest hosts. BRAVO Dave!

as promised, More Monkey Business!
involve yourself in "a colloquy of strange apes" at MonkeyFist, & then our fellow primates will engage & entertain you at DamnDirtyApe.com. You can go ape over at Bluemonkey.org, then immediately begin assisting the search for other intelligent monkeys at 100Monkeys.org, and if you still haven't experienced enough monkee-dom, go to monkeypunch or brassmonkey and last, but not least (& certainly still mo' monkey biz to come), go seeking knowledge at monkey search.

2.8.00

It's a shame that the New Yorker hasn't made more content avail on-line, maybe increase subscribers in one way or another, readership certainly, ultimately the purpose of any publication that prides itself on "content". I usually read it on my bus ride home, & the issue of Feb 7 including work by Jonathan Weiner (a moving piece on two brothers), and James Kaplan's piece on Jurr Luce (think of being in a Dallas, Tx restaurant when you say that out loud), both worth the price of the issue

2.7.00

okay, so not everyone enjoys D. Letterman like I do....
yet it might be worth watching this week, sort of a retrospective of particular guest interviews, w/ Charles Grodin, Regis Philbin & Paul Shaffer alternating as guest host while Mr L. remains "on the mend".
THIS is a list of the guests appearing this week.
Will the show really be unscripted?
pos, nos vamos aver, eh....
YEEEEEHAH! i mentioned some big wave activity at Maverick's earlier this month, and while catching up w/some favorite blogs this am, discovered this from the esteemed MoreLikeThis
