saw a very strange thing on the evening news tonight... 2.21.05
NBC evening news, part of the the Bush in Brussels coverage, brief snippet of video that followed footage of the braying moron seated next to J. Chirac, including his declaring he's "looking for a good cowboy." (YeeeeHaahhhh!), and then there he was, POV was over the shoulder of the female interviewer, ol' Georgey-boy himself with a shit-eatin' grin on his face, something flirty going on in his eyes with the woman seated across from him, and his declaration in this case, post-interview? "You've got great eyes!";
perhaps I'll be able to locate clip of that later, certainly expecting to see some mention of it elsewhere,
in the meantime, yourstruly was in the bird room this Am, performing the feeding & cleaning of cages chore where it is our habit to be listening to NPR. Heard the news about Hunter Thompson, am certain you can find much online over the next few days in tribute to the man and his work. Ourowndarnself immersed ourself in much of his writing a bit over a year ago, if you're interested you can check out the august '03 archive, and maybe renting and viewing Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas might be a fine way of paying tribute. Definitely ought to check out esteemed C.J.'s links at BookNotes too!
sorry 'bout the constant complaining you hear me doing about technical difficulties with the old computer and dealing with a damned dial up, but it becomes such a drag, before I leave you though, a couple of things to mention: maybe on your local PBS station (goodness knows why the local station chooses to show only selected Frontline proggies), check out Frontline for Rumsfield's War and A Company of Soldiers, and last of all, from the Sunday NYT, F. Rich's The White House Stages Its 'Daily Show'

MMM MMM Good... 2.17.05
those triple Ms a reference to film seen recently, A Very Long Engagement, something ourowndarnself recommends you ought to go and see yourself, marvelous story well told, something of a romance, something like a detective story, certainly in the realm of antiwar film, and of the dozen or so films I've seen over the last year, I'll put A Very Long Engagement at the top of the list. I've long admired the careers of Mssrs Jeunet and Caro, and while I enjoyed Jeunet's Amelie very much, I am a good deal more impressed by and affectionate towards A.V.L.E. There's plenty of chewy, linky goodness re Caro & Jeunet via those Google links but I'd like to point you to a couple of Jeunet interviews, one here from '01, shortly after the release of Amelie; interview w/Caro & Jeunet, discussing City of Lost Children; collection of trailers in QuickTime of some of Jeunet's work, and then this interview from Paris Ex-pat.

not as ashamed of myself as I ought to be... 2.10.05
but considering how much time, effort & energy yourstruly once invested in this weblogging endeavor, well, every time I go elsewhere (in this case, the always marvelous wood s lot) and discover something like this chunk of linky goodness, confessing to you that I'd watched PBS Newshour on Friday where I first heard about those stories in this interview, goshdarnitall Binky, got to admit that the impulse to jump on-line and get the word out there as quickly as possible is, well, not sure where it is, but it is absent and who knows, mebbe down the road a bit ourowndarnedself will be back equipped with fatpipe connection and more up-to-date Mongoose, but right now, mea culpa, kiddies, presently built for comfort, rather than speed...
otra cosa mas, amigos y amigas, most entertaining (and occasionally aggravating) half hour of television you'll see anywhere is the McLaughlin Group, locally televised only 8Pm on Friday eves.
and jessferdahalibut, script of SNL parody of the McLaughlin Group in action...

grey ashy smudges on people's foreheads hereabouts... 2.9.05
and, lapsed (WAY lapsed) catholic that yourstruly has become, it takes a bit o'time before one realizes it happens to be Ash Wednesday (& Google's logo design choice is interesting in that regard, no?). Momz provided me with heretofore unknown item, some churches have sort of a Do-It-Yourself Ash on Forehead facility they set up in the church, for those busy catholics who haven't time to indulge in the Mass...
from that left coast newspaper ourowndarnself enjoyed Love/Hate relationship with, David Lazarus posits "Who set energy policy?";
also from SFGate/S.F. Chronicle, interview w/R. Williams re visiting Iraq
(wondering how my ol' pals on the killing floor at Khronicle Klassifieds are faring, what kind of new bullshite they've to deal with now that those empty suits at the Hearst Corporation have replaced the esteemed Steve Falk with one of their own, methinks once July 1 comes around, things at the Chron going to get U G L Y...)
una cosa mas, 'fore I hasten my hind-end off elsewhere, Melanie provides a heads up re BBC ad campaign

Winnie's spinning in his grave... 2.7.05
recalling the moment a couple of weeks ago, upon initially hearing that a certain ex-Beatle was the halftime headliner for this year's stupor bowl, thinking what surer sign the Apocalypse is indeed upon us...
update on fred & wilma's clutch of five eggs, second hatchling appeared on Saturday, a rainy day in the local environs, wet and rainy thru-out the day, rainy on Sunday too, altho more along the lines of intermittent showers (some of them sizable ones). On late Pm ride out to east side rendevouz, a lovely evening really, lots of clouds in the sky, distant rainshowers visible on every horizon, the sun setting bestowing a wonderful light throughout the evening sky. Whilst sitting in tavern conversing with new pal (having successfully avoided any proximity to stuporbowl extravaganza until then), overheard McCartney's halftime show, & really wishing John was still around, I'd wager LARGE that he'd not have stooped to such nonsense. Ok, now to some chewy linky goodness...
from some of the supplemental reading matter yourstruly has indulged in of late,
from pages of Acoustic Guitar's March issue, a heads up re D. Frasca's the Monkey; the Feb. 7 issue of the New Yorker provides news that Bob Brozman performed
at the Good Coffeehouse Music Parlor in Park Slope, Brooklyn on the 4th, goshdarnitall...
and also from the same New Yorker issue, Homeland Insecurity, by William Finnegan;
ourowndarnself & the Momz enjoyed an afternoon matinee's viewing of Eastwood's latest, and from Film Comment, the extended version of brief interview published in the Jan/Feb issue;
two items (yesssssss, Binky, only two...) from the Sunday NYT,
this from the editorial pages, Read the Fine Print, Binky-poo, followed by E. Porter's Figuring a Social Security Benefit Under Bush's Plan. o-tay Katz und Kittezz, just remember "George Bush is BAD Medicine!"
