still grey & occasionally rainy, but...
for some reason, here on the last day of January '00, i feel the imminent arrival of spring, which means i will be investing some time & money visiting one of my favorite places . I didn't devote much energy to gardening or caring for my yard over the last couple of years and it's now time to change that. Know of any good gardening links? Send 'em here. Thank you!!

& before i get totally dumbed out & forget:
Mc Coy Tyner is closing out the first of his annual two-week residency at Yoshi's w/his quintet tonite, Billy Higgins, Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Lovano & Charnett Moffett making up the rest of the crew. He'll be joined by Stanley Clarke (YES!) and Al Foster for the second week beginning Tuesday. Another notable visitor to Yoshi's mid-Feb is Ahmad Jamal. Speaking of exciting visitors to the S.F. Bay Area check out this link for your Springtime listening pleasure. All shows in wonderful small venues, and a marvelous opportunity to see some fine musicians in action. closing out the month w/a HD upgrade with a BIG THANK YOU to my brother K., always the best right hand guy when it comes to techie stuff, particularly MS/Windows related. Upgraded to new & improved and (but of course) LARGER HD, which took just about all of my saturday, but it was time enjoyably spent in the company of my younger Bro, who's become extremely familiar w/the arcane science of meddling w/windows installation, HD partitioning, locating precious drivers & bios updates and is THE MAN when it comes to keeping my precious Mongoose hale & hearty. Mongoose is made "from scratch" so to speak, with MB replaced in Sept, upgraded to a K6/2-400, ATI wonder pro (allowing me to watch hoops while sitting here cranking out product) new case, fan & power supply. OOOOOH lala!!! and the best thing of all: IT WORKS!!!!!!

Tuesday, January 25, 2000 seems like something to be concerned about altho our lovely mother earth is a huge mechanism, i am becoming more convinced our actions are affecting it adversely

Wednesday, January 19, 2000 "the road to Hell is paved w/good intentions"
on 1/10 my DSL provider PacBell sent out a message re necessity of changing passwords, possibly hacked, or somesuch, and as is my modus operandi, i procrastinated until a week later when i finally did so... seems that in the year since i initially signed up they had modified things; now two passwords are required, one for the main account & one for email, so changing the main account allowed me to play with my P-bell home page, etc, but cut me out of email altogether (pacbells that is- like many cyber exp'd folk, i have a number of email addresses, with my primary through a registered domain name i share w/my brother & attended by another ISP altogether) So, making this already long story shorter, I salute customer service reps Chuck (VERY helpful- actually solved the difficulty) & Deacon (who may still be mystified by the obscure ways of the PacBell corporate mind) for their efforts on my behalf.
and now, for those stalwart enough to have read to this point, here is a reward for putting up w/my rant.

Whappened? celebrated my birthday yesterday in a low-key manner, as is my habit, my moms in town (accompanied me on the LA trip) & that makes it a little more celebratory. A couple of quotes on B-days & the "maturation process" in gen'l: Women over thirty are at their best, but men over thirty are too old to recognize it.
- Jean-Paul Belmondo, French actor Age is a very high price to pay for maturity.
- Tom Stoppard, British playwright You are only young once, but you can stay immature indefinitely.
- Ogden Nash so, drop me a note and wish me a Happy 39th!!!!
1.8.2k sooooooooo GOOD to be back home. 2 things that always recall L.A. for me are helicopters & palm trees; interesting that i experienced both of those in a simultaneous fashion my first morning there, of which more later, but for now, two films that i heartily recommend: Almodovar's "All About My Mother" and Paul Thomas Anderson's
"Magnolia" & for more about the latter go here
1.4.2k this dumbmonkey is on a pilgrimage to L.A. (of all places), paying his respects to his late grandmere. my-own-damn-self & asst'd relatives will be gathering together to celebrate her birthday tomorrow. here is something i found that approximates my mixed feelings toward this particular piece of geography. i'll be leaving LA friday & back home on the weekend
dumbmonkey is a BIG fan of joe's cartoons joe's

1.2.2k a bit of silliness to welcome the new year (a reminder not to take myself too seriously) ship of jokes
