A beautiful close to a fantastic Early Summer kind of day in the Bay Area, record 80+ deg temps, great weather if you happen to be in a brand new ballpark. enjoy your weekend... uh... honey, don't let a smile be your umbrella... credit to the cruelmonkey for this well, that just totally f**ked up at least 10 years worth of karma... a decidedly more leisurely post-midday post hey, heard fm my bud Lee at audiohighway.com, & no, he not responsible for look of the place, but sez "Cupertino is not a place i'd like to be... for long" and while sending him this link our eyes caught this one & dumbmonkey ALWAYS likes to share... note to E. Smith, come & play the Freight in Berzerkly will ya please? wethinx kobe have his mitts full w/Iverson tonight... a hurried post dumbmonkey in reflective mood this am after reading Tracey's post of 3.31 touching me deeply... also a tip of the ol'red fez to astroman for the 3.31 re iceberg, which recalls this from the dumbmonkey link vault damn, as big as Rhode Island? been inna kinda funk, so mea culpa so we just caught up to this & we gotz lotza catching up to do. tippin' the red fez to Running Tally BLOG ON!!! these damnable meetings endemic to corp. culture, especially when the purpose turns out to be RAH RAH, hurrah for us, & the meeting we attended this morn completely f**ked up my day, never seemed to get back in tune, in balance, & the next 6 hrs were not pleasant, but today was our FRIDAY, and now dumbmonkey is free, free, free ! well, till monday rolls around again... rushing to catch bus to city, posted poetry.com link instead of the one we couldn't locate (doh!) & rec'd email from pal Betsey C., earstwhile publisher of S.F. Call broadsheet, pointing out this, which is NO WAY to treat a monkey, even dumb ones, so in between selling ads we managed to add originally intended link, but since day was way f**ked up, was never able to get to the essential item we meant to post, so here goes: may be a dumbmonkey, but we appreciate craftsmanship whether it be the fine joinery found in a beautiful custom yacht, marvelously finished work of a master luthier, or a sentence of such weight & precision that it elicits a tear, smile or laughter. we try to keep our life simple & make effort to avoid attachment to the material world & related aquisition of the newest, brightest & shiniest, we really try, but there are some possessions that parting with would be painful, one of them being a first edition of the collected works of Robinson Jeffers, who is surely not on many folks lists of favored poets, but has touched this dumbmonkey soul like few others. we also wanted to share this quiero dejar las palabras ir y despertar los sentidos no quiero la memoria sino abrazar cada instante hasta la locura quiero pensar con los pies quiero llorar con los hombros quiero prender fuego al cuerpo Francisco X. Alarcon & if this lowercase uncorrectness really bothers you tough shit... on this beautiful morning in Spring a quote from the NYT posted yesterday re Poet S. Heaney: In speaking about the power of poetry, Mr. Heaney once said that "no lyric has ever stopped a tank," but on the other hand the impact can be unlimited: "It is like the writing in the sand in the face of which accusers and accused are left speechless and renewed." "I use the writing in the sand analogy," he said, "because poetry is totally fragile and creates a moment of concentration. If you meet people to whom poetry means something, there's an excitement and a conveyance of value. 'Miles to go before I sleep' is, in one sense, an obvious simple poem, but in another sense for many people it houses understanding." & then you can go here but a .com after the word poetry does seem a bit incongruous to me... HEY, that's not where we meant to link to, this is... & somebody wet themselves seems like a racket being made around here, & jeez, are we glad that nobody said anything about anybodys mommy... & if that wetting oneself continues, maybe try Depends to avoid any embarassment in public dumbmonkey picked up on weblogging late, no doubt, & wonders how many of us probably started out doing this thing like emailing bunches of links to pals & family, and putting 'em on yr 1st webpage when U was just a cyber-babee, & then LO & BEHOLD, blogs came to be. we likes most of them, certainly there be many very talented boyz&gurlz, adept w/the technology & s/w, as well as those who simply write well & w/wit and style. A little criticism now and again isn't a bad thing at all, our human tendencies will create cliques, tribes, & possibly cabals, but another year or two down the line, the chaff will have shaken out, those amongst the blogging clan w/oppty to make the big bucks will go and do so, possibly grow too big for their weblog togs, some of the rest of us may evolve into who knows what- damn, maybe we get a low-power FCC lic., combined with shoutcast or whatever the next generation of that becomes, and make a different kinda noise. kinda bothersome tho, still, folks opinions occasionally being wielded like truncheons, and we don't like getting bruised any more than the next monkey... peace the Tornado is a FAST sailing machine and if you happen to be around Santa Cruz over the weekend, you oughta check 'em out... more on this later, been waiting to post this all morning missed the bus, took the train happily found a discarded NYT, where we found this re S. Heaney's Beowulf translation (happily & co-incidentally read great piece on the poet in last week's New Yorker) which is now on my must read list, then ALSO this on another book we'll be adding to our increasingly lengthy list. holy shit kemosabe, it's 100th monkey alloveragain... re earlier raving on about ugly trends in blogdom, now the fair lady Elise speaks up re counting words Right on, Fair Lady! back to hoopin' for a bit the Oak hits bigtime shot in final seconds for win against the Cavs (& damn, they oughta let us make those tiny things bigger-yah, helpful if you use a fatter pipe) these fellas got game and good perspective on the pro game largely, but you will find some mention of the tourney here as well. and speaking of the tourney, we're winding up towards the finals on 4.3, apparently w/Michigan State as a heavy favorite. we aren't convinced yet, as there has been exemplary play by the four teams involved, so we'll see... yeeaaaaah, Babeee, you tell it as it is!!! scribing this before my rush to the bus, and catching a glimpse of some of our fave bloggies, and caught K.M.'s logo re-design (NICE, we likes it!), saw he also caught last nite's hoop action (whoa, watch out for Sacto in 2001) but, K.M., you the MAN on the whole this kinda subjective popularity-i link you/you link me-blogger is best/manila can't be beat-iwasatSXSWmakingmecoolerthananyofyou is just absolute horsepoop and there be PLENTY comrades amongst the webloggers making worthwhile reading rather than the mere handful some people continue to refer to, wethinks that growth & diversity is a really good thing, & now maybe dumbmonkey getting carried away, but damn, we got our name in lights again and that always gives us a twinkle I KISS YOU, K.M.!!! aaagggghhh, get that dam monkey away from me! for the piece on Martin Scorsese by Mark Singer and an excerpt from soon to be published journals of Sylvia Plath once upon a time, a young dumbmonkey in love made a gift of Plath's "Ariel" to brown-eyed, curly haired lovely before he went away to service in the navy, she heading to college and perhaps life of writer/poet. she instead married, has several children, and became a schoolteacher, while our path took us west where many adventures awaited. wonder if she stills reads poetry... frontpage tale from the daily fishwrap & what's really distressing about reading stories like this is that none of us are suprised or dumbfounded anymore... now that spring is here, summer's due & a suggestion for those of you wanting to get away from the hustlin' bustlin' stinky crowded city, visit some beautiful country along the Highway 395 corridor along the Eastern Sierras. Make your plans quick enough & you can make it to the Mule Days Celebration in Bishop, CA. Take in the sights of Mono Lake, the Devil's Postpile, hike the Ansel Adams's Wilderness, and if you're fortunate enough to live in California, you can cover a bunch of territory in several long weekends. dumbmonkey feels this area is the place he could spend the rest of his dayze. lazy-ass dumbmonkey cross-posting like crazy visit the highly esteemed Ghost in the Machine who ever so adroitly links to lovely rant by Neale who succinctly "puts the boot in", & piece by D. Edelstein re Mr. Caine's acceptance speech. (go there, lots more to see on Mr. Murphy's site). Speaking of the aforementioned Neale, we have him to thank for pointing this out to us (Blog you like a Hurricane made us laugh so hard we dropped our banana). The bestest in the midwestest Swallowing Tacks for this (SF fulla stinkky smellz sometimez, too) tambien con un abrazo MUY GRANDE for putting the dumbmonkey name in "lights" just cuz we likes to say "F**K" so much... and Chuck & pals know how to throw an Oscar party. OOOOH lala, not that we couldn't stand to lose a few (a FEW?!) lbs., but damn, you only live once... are preventing some of this page from loading correctly, & don't even try going to the dsb page, that damn pacbell.net is funking things up, Bad pacbell.net, bad, bad, bad, deserve many spankings!!! a wee bit more re Oscar nite... a real pleasure to see Best Actress awarded to Hilary Swank for her magnificent work in Boys Don't Cry, & you'll find two interviews w/her here and here. again, the award presented to Mr. Caine is for the specific role in Cider House, but his body of work (oh yah, sure there are some of those mortgage-paying roles)speaks for itself, but as far as we're concerned, two roles in particular, his Ray Say in Little Voice & Mortwell in Mona Lisa, serve as fine examples of this versatile & talented man. Bravo, Mr. Caine. to mystery scribe Al 404, who kindly clued me in to this for Dan fans... why i still watch the oscars... Michael Caine is awarded Best Supporting Oscar to huge applause from the attendees, & his acceptance speech was one of the most gracious we've witnessed. TOO RIGHT! & we're okay w/Ethan Hawke, actor, but novelist? let's see a few more books first, sir... Feliz Cumpleanos a mi Papa!!! Te quiero Mucho, Papasito... & in celebration, a poem for your birthday
Leaves glowing in the sun, zealous hum of bumblebees, Czeslaw Milosz status: not dead: thawing
dumbmonkey hopes y'all have a NICE weekend... & this a tougher morn than most, first time in weeks when dumbmonkey had to be on the j-o-b by 7AM, which means catching the 6am bus, just to make sure there's opportunity enough to stroll by Peet's for my double short latte, & enjoy the 15/20 minute stroll to 5th & mission. the bus is an express which stops a block from home (yah, very lucky) and we took along a book of short stories by Andre Dubus, & thought, when we getz home we will post some mention of this fine writer. If you're not familiar w/his work, here is another link on him. The volume we brought along is the Selected Stories, & we reread w/great pleasure his powerful story Rose, Found this one available on-line & perhaps it will be enough to encourage you to go seek out more, & don't get confused when you see books by A. Dubus III on the same shelf, that's his son, a fine craftsman in his own write. what makes it worth going to work at 7AM? getting off at 1 & meeting Bro K & wife LizBeth for Vietnamese lunch, TOO yummy... OH YEAH, and the Sweet Sixteen begin hooping it up today Jet Li Homepage Jet Li Official website TapeHead's Jet Li page a girl can't have enough shoes dumbmonkey enjoys contemplating the mystery of why shoes play a big part in the lives of many of the monkeywomen he familiar (& unfamiliar) with, & since most of our behaviors are genetically determined, he wonders what aspect of evolutionary determinism has resulted in the prevalance of the "shopping" gene, especially the shopping for shoes gene. anywayz, for the record, he surely enjoys his ambles thru S.F. Fin Dist on a lovely spring day, appreciating the sight of ALL the well-shod monkeygurlz, especially the ones w/cute toesies... vive la difference!!! Menage a Trois anybody? yessssss we do, sometimes, amongst other things, cook while naked, and perhaps this site will provide some support for the nudity-challenged amongst us watch out when yr deep frying yr tempura tho... Death by Sex? uhhhhhhh, don't think so... everyday, the blank text input box looks the dumbmonkey squarely in his eyes w/it's subtle challenge: gotz sometink to say loverboy? d'ya really tink sumbuddy have enuf time to waste to read this doggerel? then he shakes his greying silverback mane and presses on, regardless... ahhh, yesterday's Lunacy post has elicited a single response, a mistaken one, that dumbmonkey be afflicted w/that perverse desire to own humongous vehicle constructed of detroit iron. no, no, my preeetty, this is NOT so, he proud owner of '79 GLC but thinking of moving up to something manufactured in the '80's... and it's early yet, we haven't any singular link or assumed original thought to pass on, so we point you to our highly esteemed fellow blogster, Cholly Kokonino and the HotsyTotsy post of 3.20, upon which we take the liberty of bestowing the title of The Dumb Monkey Theorem & is as good an explanation as any for why we continue to elect the kind of leaders we deserve. late arriving monkeybusiness we refer you to No. 401 in Slate's News Quiz or, why did i buy this damn thing anyway? apologies for the old, but timely link, in light of the price of gasoline credit where credit's due... firstly, to the Catwoman who appears to be another person w/finely honed sensibilities allowing appreciation of Jim Jarmusch yah, gotta agree absolutely depressing Ghost Dog's on NINETEEN screens while that peezacrap mission to mars is on thousands... and since there's nada on TV (except the earlier game where the lakerdudes beat the heat-Take THAT Pat Riley) dumbmonkey wishes to tip hissoldredfez to Medley for the headsUP on the Letterman piece in Salon today, dumbmonkey taped that show, w/hope of offering up an mpeg of Foo Fighters doing Dave's favorite tune, 'cause it TRULY ROXX!!! we be channel surfing whilst typing away here & what's this???? A tale of Two Bunnies???? Oy Vay!!!!! michael corleone or rather, Al Pacino in the role of the heir apparent, particularly in Godfathers I & II, has to be my favorite of his varied characters. Kathleen Murphy examines Mr. Pacino's career in this month's Film Comment magazine. earning a tip of the ol'redfez for making some content available online damn, STML kicks in again... (that's short term memory loss for y'all fortunate enough to never experience it) dumbmonkey just cannot remember (& doesn't wanna go thru the trouble of revisiting all the bloggies he likes to peruse) so i owe you one, OKAY?. used to enjoy fucker.com & most of you know they have been on an extended hiatus (disappearance is more like it) & been aware of this for some time, (so get to the point willya!) & was directed to this courtesy of forgotten blogster. anyway, Damn, is it WINDY here today. sunny, bright & clear, but blustery as hell, if yr wearing a kilt or skirt, watch out!!! & we are not even gonna get into my tourney picks, OKAY? ahhhhhhh, now we remembers... it was the esteeemed calamondin sportsmanship and ethical behavior, this link to a NY Times piece by R. Lipsyte. damn! my brackets are a shambles... the Equinox approacheth... a few links to celebrate the long awaited arrival of Le Printemps a pagan perspective a selection of calendars Celebrating the Equinox Anybody got the time? for fellow stargazers dumbmonkey gambles occasionally & he not adverse to roulette, craps or slots; he terrible poker player; not very confident at blackjack, and he certainly never wager on his tourney brackets, cause he seem to get his ass kicked WAY too often. Upset City after 1st day of 2nd round, we learn we should have stayed w/Gonzaga, & who'd ever thought UCLA would trounce Maryland (DAMN!! i had Maryland in the Finals w/Temple) we won't even talk about Arizona. so let this be a lesson to all other dumbmonkeys, stick w/Lotto, or the occasional trip to Tahoe or Vegas, but don't put money on hormonally challenged adolescents in March. we found this yesterday & noting the date of the article, thought WHOA, maybe we should'a paid more attention, but then again, he thought Ball St might take UCLA. that's the beauty of the whole thing, there are few sure things & lose one game & you are OUTA HERE... dumbmonkey would like to put the spotlight on something often overlooked & taken for granted. In Feb we discovered this story in the LA Times on-line sports site w/intentions of doing something w/it on Mar 7th. well, you all know how life gets in the way of one's best intentions occasionally, but while watching some of the hoops action in the tourney, we were reminded of the importance of sportsmanship and ethical behavior in general so we spent some time last nite & this AM seeking out those essays, and you can peruse what we discovered below: Citizenship through Sports Alliance this from LA TIMES of 3.9.00This site is the one noted in the original LA Times piece read in Feb, w/this link to Nat'l Sportsmanship Day, where we discovered a link to USA Today essay contest (altho nothing mentioning LA Times) so proceeded to USA Today archives (& i applaud their decision to make achives searchable for free-for the time being at least-) and found these using "sportsmanship" as keyword: essay by Kelly Rice essay by Aroha Fanning essay by Patrick Kolsky essay by Katie McGwin which we figure are the winners in the four categories mentioned, & altho we hate to assume, it isn't exactly clear at the INS website (no, NOT la migra). ANYWAY... (if you're still reading this, send me a note when you're gonna be in the Bay Area and dumbmonkey will buy you dinner, but there will be a quiz!) if there is a point to all this, it is our hope that all of us are considering our actions in light of fair play, the golden rule, and righteous behavior. Peace f o r D A N f a n s . . . whilst dumbmonkey was exercising his literary bent. Inspired by conversation w/co-worker yesterday, inquiry began who was dumbmonkey's favorite author, & response was OOOOH, cannot be just one, probably min of 10 but more like 25 in a pantheon of first rate scribes whose work we enjoy, then ran across many of the following while seeking links & sites to some of those favorites: Books@Random; then this site from Univ of Leipzig provides a large number of author related links, altho i have found several dead links unfortunately, still plenty to seek out there, like this Burroughs resource (wishing we could locate some of his diarys on-line, ol'WSB kept marvelous diaries...); Book, The Magazine for the Reading Life; oooooOOOOOOoooh, Kafka....; a disclaimer before we go much further: dumbmonkey has studiously avoided linking to ANY on-line book dealer, you know who they are and how to get there if you gotta, but we staunchly support our local independent bookseller as well as utilize our public library, and now w/that out of the way, you can try Writers Hood, Crania, and boldtype. Ghost Dog opens in the Bay Area today & as dumbmonkey is not as one-dimensional as you might imagine, we taking a break from March Mayhem & checking it out TODAY, local review avail here and here HOKAY, we're now into 2nd day of tourney and it looks like dumbmonkey picks okay after the first day, (lucked out w/Gonzaga, but my Fresno St went south), go here & take a gander at 'em if you're interested. feel free to share yours if you fancy this sort of thing... dumbmonkey has finally checked out Napster, largely 'cause Bro K was SO DAMN EXCITED by this proggie, & i gotztawonder myowndamnself, what took me so long (pissed me off that someone else had already used dumbmonkey as an ID, but dat monkey's karma be catching up wit him someday) as we found 3 tracks we very fond of: Rosanne Cash's Seven Year Ache, Badfinger's No Matter What AND K.D. Lang's Constant Craving. so we be busy this weekend putting some of our own mp3z into the library as we got some prime little musical nuggets of our own to share the march madness LOD has been moved to yr left, & you'll find it there for the remainder of the tourney, any interested folk will find my bracket posted on the DSB page later this weekend (no, dumbmonkey NOT a cheater, just slow and have procrastinating nature). DSB?? what dat u say, just click dumbmonkey at top of page & u learn going out for coffee & walking my faithful pooch now links? ya wanna see some links, eh? okay, in celebration of the Ides 0'March, & yah, it was yesterday, but regular perusers of dumbmonkey need no further explanation, so here now, a recap of earlier dumbmonkey-ness: a favorite Mc Sweeney's keeping it light w/ship of jokes from WORD & here's the dumbmonkey post of 2.29.00 Jim Jarmusch is back... with new film being released March 3rd, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, starring Forest Whitaker. incidentally, good interview w/Jim Jarmusch on IFC this month, hope you get to see it. damn, i gotzto get going, gonna miss my bus to the city! March Madness Link o'the Day & should you be seeking hoops related diversion upon the announcement of the 64 Team field, you can go here, here, and here. tip o'the red fez to furtive ex altho the link he attributes to Jorn on 3/2 doesn't get ya there March Madness link o'the day and since it is the day before the brackets are announced, here's another just for the heckovit... dumbmonkey was perusing the schedule of sxsw panels and was dismayed to find that (apparently) the only person on any panels (& the ONLY one listed on one in particular) representing adult (or as Jason K. put it "for big-kids only")content is Danni Ashe, of Danni's Hot Box (DANGER WILL ROBINSON DANGER), & goodness knows, this dumbmonkey enjoys the sight of naked monkeywomen as much (probably more!) as the next dumbmonkey, but where are the monkeyfolk from nerve, Clean Sheets, Blue Nudes, et al? dumbmonkey also not at ALL certain he be liking the looks of the weblog panel pamie's from austin. you can watch this event along with a few others from pamie's part of the world here Austin, Texas looks like a really nice weekend in the Lone Star state. i include this essay by G. Au revoir, Bill Bradley. March Madness link o'the day alongside this brief reminder of tonite's Big Game prompting dumbmonkey to ask 'where else ya gonna find a buncha loud, grey-haired people 'cept in Arizona?' am becoming more fond of the new CD the more i listen to it, particularly the title track, so pass this along to read while listening. while dumbmonkey in the mood for sharing, thought to list this as well all in a days work well, seems there is discord in Waitakere City. No, i am not going to Austin for SXSW... (dammittohell!) so i am making up for dis innaBIGway, by immersing myself in M.M. here are some links re tomorrow's BIG GAME between Arizona & Stanford, so now just go Boogie Ooogie Ooogie & so long to Dennis R., who quickly wore out his welcome in Dallas revisiting an earlier post in our dumbmonkey of 2.24, we linked to a couple of sites re hazards of a fisherman's life. Local columnist wrote about this in reference to book recently published. Bravo, Mayor Bob takes a fella from Waitakere City, NZ to show 'em how it's done... March Madness link o'the day dumbmonkey beseeches your forgiveness for nearly overlooking this... March Madness link o'the day hmmmmm. well, we find out how right this fellow is on sunday... dumbmonkey is NOT foolish enough to believe that he be the only fool who can provide this suggestion to Maliszewski's query, & because he believe that SO deeply, he hasn't emailed or in any other other fashion (ESP?) sent along his discovery, so feel free to do so, AND you can take credit for it, as dumbmonkey is a generous fool, to be sure... spring definitely in the air... altho more rain in the local forecast. the local newspaper of record has published (w/substantial fanfare) a special section of The Best of the Web, (which incidently is chock FULL of dot.com advertising, no doubt providing many many newspapers with newly found sources of manna disguised as advertising income) of which all this dumbmonkey can say is NOT! to the possibility of springtime in Paris... does KRCB HAVE to run the Steely Dan concert on a pledge nite? here's hoping KQED doesn't have similar plans later this month & by the way MARCH MADNESS is afoot... dumbmonkey time travels to 2.29: Jim Jarmusch is back... with new film being released March 3rd, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, starring Forest Whitaker. also (because dumbmonkey is a servant to the cause of royalty) our 2.28: "oh, what I do for England..." Hmmmmmm, is that a feather in your bonnet or are you just happy to see us? and returning to albany home on a rainy saturday night, we wuz pleazzd to discover great pic of Steve Dwyer on front page of sf chronicle (SOMEBODY there must be surfin') w/this from their page alongside KRON video available here. dumbmonkey offers the following not knowing & not caring of yr opinion of mssrs Becker & Fagen, & admitting he lay stunned upon his floor having witnessed said Esteemed Gentlemen do a promo spot for CNN World Beat.... i'm really sorry i missed the show, but sometimes i get the feeling he'd just like us to listen to the CD & leave him alone. & then there's this little bit of cheer which i guess means you ought to be eating or drinking it definitely more enjoyable than swallowing capsules... courtesy APOD for one thing, there are just TOO many guns around.... 2nd-ly, dumbmonkey tends to forget many of his contemporaries are much younger than hisowndamnself, and can be forgiven their occasional stupidities, but i got to say that if a person is hired to wait tables, & initially asked to wear one set of clothes on the job only to find one day, that if she wants to keep the damnlousythanklesstask of waiting on neanderthal males undergoing hormonal rages she now has to wear something much more revealing, and even if this j-o-b is in a strip club, you know, she is entitled to feel resentment, 'cuz she isn't one of the performing staff, for one thing, & her job puts her within the proximity of cretins, morons, & losers, usually all males of the species, who figure she MUST be here for our entertainment, like the other ladies are, and, well, i'm just surprised at the unthinking reaction of some of the younger monkey-men out there. AND (yeah, i'm ranting & venting a little this AM) i am SO tired of learning about another beautiful child whose life is over because of ignorant, stupid, & criminal behavior by people who should know better. LESS GUNS=BETTER WORLD! damn, some dumbmonkeys will never, ever get it... i am so depressed by some of this (right here in the midst of awaiting springtime AND the arrival of the new steelydan) by the lack of real moral courage & conviction of the people some of us have chosen to lead this country, by the proliferation of bigger & bigger motor vehicles that seem to contain only the driver clogging the streets while bus lines & public tranz continues to lose out..... dumbmonkey has been allowed an extra day away fm his j-o-b so maybe this long weekend he hie hisowndamself to calistoga/points north and mud-bathe/sauna/sweat all the poisons outta his soul, and hope he can come back & continue to fight the good fight, but U know, those odds are wearing me out! ciao Babee! what you can put off 'til tommorow? In honor of National Procrastination Week, March 2-8, dumbmonkey offers this page, this one, & this one. keep up the good work! should you be curious about a few of the other strange & wonderful celebratory dates awaiting you, go here. to welcome the advent of spring... eyestorm, Gravity, Urban Desires, and Dead Letters. the scent of spring in the air... |
