the horror, the horror
our dislike of mondays has increased with the frequency of five-day workweeks which
have been our lot in life of late, & the quality of the weekend seems to make very little
difference in any attempt of ours at "attitude adjustment", goddam, just lobotomize me
& maybe this whole wage slave business will be easier to stomach...
so what did you do over the weekend? ourowndamnself enjoyed a really marvelous meal,
at local Thai restaurant that had remained off of our list to try for such a very long
time, and as Brother K was in town (solo, sans kinder & Liz-Beth) we thought, after a
morning of CD shopping at Amoeba's on Telegraph, to check it out. oh, tres yummy!
the laker-dudes also managed to show up and play extremely well in game one of the Finals
(yah, we know it's the WCF, but as far as any genuine hoopster's aware, this is The Finals)
& unlike last year, we have avoided much mention of one of our fave pastimes & spectator sports
roundball, hoops, basketball, in other words. Nah, no particular reason, 'cepting perhaps we
got a feeling that no one but ourowndamnself & a select few (howdy K.M.!) gave a damn...
we actually a little on the flat side emotionally, not feeling our usual feisty self,
the tenor of the times has a lot to do with it, along w/what appears to be the general
acceptance of the status quo, and we not sure why it getting under our skin so, but it is...
found these via NYT,
Paul Krugman sez Burn, Baby, Burn;    Maureen Dowd, Drill, Grill & Chill
& as we pretty much avoided anything to do with webstuff this weekend, that's all folks...
activity here be very light & intermittent this week, & yah, we know we said that before
but we're feeling the need to restore our equilibrium a bit, so perhaps after the
impending holiday weekend we'll return w/a fresh face & invigorated sense of self worth,
but before we take our leave, check out the mighty fresh looks at

5.10: alright, please don't sue us...
New Yorker 100 Day Quiz a few days ago, whilst perusing fave blogsters, we came across this interesting link
(thanks for the heads-up to wood s lot otra vez...), in which the esteemed Mr. Moore reminds us that the majority of our elected officials are serving the same masters,
and those masters do not include the electorate, as big money talks in national politics,
increasingly so in all other political theatres; that we are ninnies to believe that the incoming administration is evil incarnate, replacing lofty ideals & strategems w/crass ideology
& the favoring of oil/energy/industrial benefactors. Whoa, no kidding. And then here again recently Mr. Moore responds to those taking issue w/his earlier discourse (& we have to mention how very grateful we are to Mark Woods of the aforementioned weblog, YOU DA MAN!)
reminding us that it is OUR responsibility to PAY ATTENTION, & each and every day do something to
increase the awareness of the national condition, and we mean our personal awareness as well as that of
our friends, family and neighbors. Let's ALL spend the next four years being the "biggest pain in the ass
ol' George has had since that cop made him take a Breathalyzer.". So, if you stumble across the ol'
dumbmonkey and what you see here resonates for you somehow, check in with many of the other concerned
weblog writers in this informal alliance, send their urls to your pals, your mom and dad, your co-workers
even if they voted republican (gawd, what an awful thought); awaken them to the value of mining a variety
of sources for information, the importance of an INFORMED ELECTORATE, to be absolutely certain when
once again casting a vote, one has a rationale for doing so, a commitment to a belief beyond simple(-minded)
party allegiance, and then DON"T STOP PAYING ATTENTION. Raise HELL!

certainly notable in our scheme of things, so we first offer up our congratulatons
& BEST WISHES to La Reina del Sur for the bright future awaiting her at NCSU.
Bravo, amica mia, Bravo!
Another major change of note is the suspension of activity at the esteemed BookNotes;
it appears Craig is taking a hiatus from his daily attentions & altho he be missed,
we have some idea that he'll be returning sometime in the future to pick up where he
left off. In the interim though, it appears that a cohort of Craig's, Fred Lapides,
has launched a new weblog, Bush Wacker which will be an addition to WWYW
as soon as we get off our complacent, lazy, fuzzy buns & do some site-maintenance.
Want to mention our awareness of Bush Wacker due to the timely mention of it's appearance
at another very fine weblog, wood s lot, which leads me to this question:
What is it about Canadians & weblogs anyway? Seems that many of the fine efforts we enjoy
on a regular basis all have a "northern neighbor" as the wizard behind the curtain; believe us,
we not complaining, just interesting to note that Riley Dog, Pith & Vinegar, No Surrender,
alongside the aforementioned wood s lot & others that we likely overlooking at this moment
are all birthed in the grey matter of astute Canadian citizens. Speaking of 'blogs of note,
there will be a fairly substantial updating of Les Autres as our astronomer in residence
has finally kicked his crack cocaine habit and has been ordered back to work as part
of his rehabilitation & work furlough program.
okayokayokay, enough of this, here's a link to something by P.J. O'Rourke,

sorta quiet around Chez D'monkey...
had the pleasure of meine Mutter's company for the last week & 1/2, & was nice
particularly as we relate to each other well as friends, which enhances the mother
& son relationship immensely. It is another blessing to have a guest so adroit at
the kind of household things that yours truly still hasn't quite got a grip on,
(not that he ever intends to) like keeping the linen closet neat & tidy, arranging
the drygoods in the pantry, neatly stashing away all the miscellaneous tools & what-not
of everyday life into boxes on shelves, and lining them up neatly one next to the other.
Some new curtains in the living room and it may be a day or two before we realize where
& / or what the other surprise may be, Ennnnywayz, Momz, it was great to have you around
and we promise a visit to you out there in arid desert south-west sometime this summer
& help you do some things around your house. Hey, how about the rest of youse? Didja havva fine
weekend? Awfully damn summery around here since last thursday, with more of that kinda thing
in store, an excellent day to observe a mental health holiday from the j-o-b, but glutton for
punishment that we are, we headin' on in to the daily grind in a little while from now...
out inattention to issues around here lately has been sporadic, but we did want to note
the passing of the great Billy Higgins, an obit from local fishwrap here, & we just want
to mention that if you have listened to jazz on a regular basis over the years of your life
you are very likely to have heard Mr. Higgin's fine work alongside many fine artists,

but whotdahell, gotta be real...

~ ~ ~
ohh it has been a L O N G week...
this particular mammal has never been fond of the traditional 40 hour week,
& has been fortunate enough to have avoided same for most of his working life
but like bad karma, it appears that we are going to be locked into that kind of
schedule for some time, and, believe us, we not seeking your sympathy, on the
contrary, it likely provide us with more of that ourselves for the wretched working
masses out there in the world around me, as really, we have very little to complain
about. It's a pleasant working environment & although "corporate", you'd be hard put
to imagine anything about the place we are employed if you went by my own appearance
whilst on the j-o-b; it pays well & there are some fine benefits; it's a union gig
which is a good thing in these days & times. So, mostly it's a matter of acclimating
ourselves to the rigors of 9-5 & (mostly) 7am-3pm, and figure in about an hour or so on
the commute to the city & back. Oh, and we'd like to thank the couple of folks who responded
positively to the "streamin' consciousness" entry of the previous morn, and it is likely
we may be indulging ourowndamnself in more of the same in future entries here, so consider
yourselves forewarned. In the meantime, a little bit of friday fun stuff for you:

streamin' consciousness...
he's late, overslept by an hour, so time enough for quick shower, dressing, &
out the door & into the monkeymobile for quick trip to the Bart station, cassette
of Best of Spinners playing "One of A Kind Love Affair", which continues
playing in his mind, providing the soundtrack to his morning commute into the
the city, damn, am i tired and the poor fool hasn't had ANY kind of
caffeinated beverage yet...
the train arrives, & there's a pause of a few long moments as he stands behind
woman who upon entering train stops to look both ways, for that perfect AM commute
seat, damn... lady, get outta the way. She scurries down the middle of
the car, thru the doors into the car ahead, he takes a seat across from the door
he entered from... "one of a kind, love affair is, the kind of love that you read
about in a fairy tale"
contemplates taking CD player from bag o'tricks & zen-ning out
on tunes during the 25 minute ride into the city, decides against it, tune in his head
pleasant enough that he can close his eyes & listen to it...
lady who stopped short upon entering car earlier comes back thru the door
still looking for that perfect seat, he quietly observes others entering car at each
stop, the train exits the underground tunnel just south of the Ashby station and it
is now obvious the day will be a warm and sunny one, the sun clearly above
the eastern horizon, the sky cloudless and a shade of bleached blue, no hint of
fog anywhere along the western horizon, where the city lies glistening in the early
morning sunlight, it is going to be a hot one today, he is thinking of the
previous afternoon when he chose to ride the bus home instead, how warm it was
then, inwardly glad he left the windows open overnight so that he won't return home
to stuffy over-heated house, maybe go back out tonite and finish the yardwork,
laughs quietly to himself recalling getting home and noticing the front yard mowed
knowing his houseguest (monkeymomz) somehow managed to accomplish that
yet knew it wasn't done with his reel mower, too evenly cut, so how did she....
then realized the reason behind her request yesterday am for Bro K's phone number
and suddenly knew, without any doubt, that K had brought along his mower, aghhhhh
but he had to laugh, had to laugh 'cause he knows she does it all outta love....
he spies tall attractive brunette, shoulder length hair, stepping into car from
the car ahead and as she walks past him, the shoulder length brown hair inspires the
thought of his bent & dented friend, the note she sent yesterday afternoon, & his intent
to have responded to it more fully, overlooked yesterday evening as he decided to
work in yard, catch some playoff hoops on the tube, only to fall asleep on the
living room sofa, eventually awakening after 11, crawling into bed, sleeping soundly
until waking earlier, & undergoing the mild panic of realizing his tardiness...
"And though you know you're right But you got to make a little sacrifice, You make it for love,"
the train speeds thru the trans-bay tunnel, he alights at the third stop into the city,
up the esacalator, a quick stop at Walgreen's for favorite Odwalla Strawberry C Monster
the two block stroll to Chronicle building at 5th & Mish, passing sleeping homeless fella,
on the brick-laid sidewalk in front of the old Emporium building
his dog asleep next to him, lying on top of the sleeping bag, dog is OUT,
not even a twitch of an ear as he strolls pass them, he thinking for a moment
wish i had the camera with me... finally in the building, stopping by coffee shop in lobby
where Joe & Fili are already hard at work, "John, you want your 'John-Special'?"
OH YEAH!!!!
these two are the hardest working pair in the building, he feels for them
particularly on Free Coffee Days, when EVERYONE in the building's lining up for
coffee on the company dime, and for Joe & Fili, a labor of love, from 6AM to
5:30PM and another hour of clean-up afterwards...
grabbing a copy of the morning fishwrap, into the elevator & up to the killing floor
double-short latte in hand, and as ready as he'll ever be, but damn,
one HELLA-tired ol' silverbacked beast, and ready for the week-end....

5.2: read Riley Dog
one of the Best in the West, for fine linkage like this:
How We Really Use The Web, Chap. 2
& you'll never (we hope) have to put up w/folks discussing what
they found in their toilets, their fondness for single-digit salutes,
& other assorted travails of twenty-somethinghood...
~ ~ ~
could there be two Mr. Irritables???
jon carroll goes to the movies
yah, we irritable lately (& HOW!!!),
hell, who isn't, what w/alladat nonsense in WashDC,
our seeming helplessness in the face of the saber-rattling &
renewal of intent to fund "space-based" deterrents
(can you say "George Bush has a small penis"?)
the short-sightedness of our elected representatives as
well as many of our fellow citizens, particularly those in the
market for the newest biggest gas-gluttonous SUV....
AAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!
WE BE MAD AS HELL & DON"T WANT TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!
whew! well, now we feelink a leeetle bettah...
anywayz, the Momz is in town visiting her monkeychild &
we took her to the movies last night, NOT same film as JC
saw, but we certainly empathize w/his take on movie-going
in this day & age. Ourowndamnselves watched Amores Perros,
& sad to say, this is another film that you hinterlanders
can count on not seeing at your local multi-plex, and curse them for it,
'cause this is a fine and powerful first time effort, was nominated for
Best Foreign Film Oscar, and speaking personally now,
absolutely worth seeing. We not sayink ennymore 'bout it,
but happy to point y'all toward MRQE where you can whet
your appetite for the eventual release to video/DVD...
