Week of October 25, 2001
After a weighty meditation on your planetary omens and a Jungian analysis
of your archetypes, I've determined that the current phase of your astrological
cycle should be referred to as party time. To be in maximum harmony with cosmic forces,
you should indulge in an unusually large amount of revelry. I'm even tempted to conclude
that you have a karmic responsibility to pursue merriment and conviviality with an
unprecedented intensity. Polite socializing and strategic networking will be good,
but they won't go far enough; you need to carouse and hobnob with fascinating lovers of life.

the resident visited N. California yesterday,
& while in that hotbed of radicalthink, Sacramento, CA,
here's what he had to say:
dubyasquawks; dubyasquawks again
this nugget of reality from yesterdays Mattier & Ross:
One call to the state Democratic Party office in Sacramento shows you that.
"It's completely political," former party political director Bob Mulholland says
of Bush's visit to Sacramento and Travis Air Force Base on his way to Shanghai.
"You refuel in Alaska if you're going to China -- not Sacramento."
What does Bush get by stopping here? "A scene-setting speech for his China trip
and a photo op of him whooping it up with some Air Force troops,"
was how one veteran member of the White House press corps summed it up.
oh my my my, it is grim, my children, grim...
wonder what the rest of the civilized world thinks when they
read that "greatest nation on the face of the Earth" bullshit...
BTW: speech content from the white house web site,

Final note (I know this is all lame this week;
I’m just dead beat and the last thing I want to
do is write - wrote a column last night and
another this afternoon, and I just want to relax
now) - every time I see the name Kandahar
on TV, I am reminded that the city was named
after a conqueror who passed through
the area: Alexander the Great.
Imagine waking up in 2000 years and seeing
the map of Afghanistan has a town named

c'est Lundi, c'est vrai, c'est terrible...
from todays little zen calendar page:
Miserably cold, the temple before dawn,
Still and lonely, few monks to be seen;
The temple is old, with soot-blackened walls,
The pond overgrown, its surface like folds in a robe;
Incense before the Buddha has burned, gone out, turned cold,
The sermon over, blossoms fly in the rain;
I've reached the point of doing away with happiness
and sadness -
A white board door swinging to and fro in the breeze.
Gido Shushin
& another by the same author:
Beginning of Spring, Written during Snow
I sit firmly on my dried-up mat, thoughts dead as ashes,
When the boy rushes in to announce that spring has returned-
The empty cold smashed to bits, the heavens dance with blossoms
That stir up what I've tried all my futile life to still!

been back home a week now...
walked up the street this Am, tracing steps once trod by myowndamnself and
furry companion of many years, nowadays it's just a solo act, made evident by
those observant folks in the neighborhood, para exemplo, after picking up triple
strength latte concoction from Peet's (no we do not starbuck thanguvurrymuch)
we walked up Solano a few feet further to Noah's Bagels for a bit of schmear
(lox, if you're curious), a couple of super-onion & a bagel stick (yummy, a fave
of the late lamented Cam-Dogg). Outside stands a fellow, seeking some financial
assistance, not your typical down & outer/spare change seeker, but someone we've seen around for
some time, disabled by some neuro-muscular affliction, someone we in the habit of offering a few bucks to, whenever we have the $$ to spare, and we
greet and I press a couple of bills into his hand & he asks "Where's Camden?"
well, a sign of emotional healing I guess, 'cause it is first time it was asked
that I was able to answer without any catch, gulp, welling of tears, but I felt
that absence immediately, part of a process of familiarization w/a certain reality, i mean, i still haven't removed her bed-pad and water dish from the front porch nor removed any of the signs of poochster residence in the backyard.
Maybe by Thanksgiving, hell, it's only a month away...
there are a couple of things we wanted to make note of, altho we well aware some of our regular visitors will
also be checking these places out (very likely at least): Paul Ford at Ftrain, for this (& we'll be sure to mention that
regular visitors to little Stevie B's Ethel-- amongst others-- already likely aware of that kind of thing); and, with a tip o'the ol'red fez (which we kinda got outta the habit of doin') to Mark/wood s lot, for this very scary thing along with all the other great
stuff (damn, he's good...) like The Pacifist Weblog and this wonderful item from which, this quote:
Here is what Goethe told us: "One should, each day, try to hear a little song,
read a good poem, see a fine picture, and, if it is possible, speak a few reasonable words."
ohhhh yahhhhh, right ON mr. G!
watched some television last night, mainly surfing inbetween tense moments during the As/Yankees game, caught
a bit of something on one of the local PBS outlets, fellow was interviewing a salesguy at a Ford dealership and
talking about the latest behemoth on wheels, something over 5 TONS, something like 15MPG, and alongside interviewing the salesdude, a couple of prospective buyers, one a young mother, fair of complexion and likely early-30s, who
was intending to purchase one of these, and when asked if she was concerned about the MPG factor and overall effect on environment of these behemoths, her answer "well, I only work about a mile away from my home so the gas mileage
doesn't bother me,
and I'd feel safer about my child in a vehicle like this".
DAMN, Lady, buy a frickin' Volvo Station Wagon, you'll be a LOT safer than inside any behemoth built by Ford Motor Co. and I'll be more likely to be able to see around that goddam TANK of yours when you're at the intersection in front of me talking on your cel-phone...
(no, yourstruly doesn't own a cell phone & hopes he never has occasion to
& we'll also take this opportunity to
tip dat ol'red fez in a salute to
Steve, Stumpy, et al of environy for the this pig suck too much campaign stickers)
before we get much farther along here, just a few words about the alliance:
(brief moment to save copy there, 'cause we just scared the crap outta ourselves thinking we'd lost this "massive" sunday post when acrobat locked up in trying to make an ftp connection outside of our firewall and,
well, looks like we were lucky that time...)
yess, we have created a sort of portal, and the tale providing some sort of explanation can be found
linked from
that site itself. I wanted to add, while conscious enough to attend to it, that every now & again someone sends me
a note and says "please add me" and, well, it's amazing how a little thing like that can cheer up an occasionally
depressed & blue primate like ourowndamnself. You know, it isn't an exclusive club or anything, it is mostly a list
of folks that I felt were paying a particular kind of attention during a highly emotionally charged period of recent history, who have (over the amount of time that I have been aware of them) impressed me with their thoughtfulness, humanity, sense of humor, and willingness to be unashamedly truthful. I've yet to receive a request to be removed from the page/list and I certainly
hope to continue to add volunteers as I fully intend to continue to add conscripts.

backround on the B.C. tune
yours truly came across this quote recently, whilst perusing un blog favorito,
attributed to Noam Chomsky, in response to this question: "What do you consider
the most reliable source of news covering the WTC and the alleged conspirators?"
N.C.'s reply: "The best thing to do is read widely and always skeptically.
Remember everyone, including me, has their opinions and their goals and
you have to think them through for yourself." (MSNBC Interview w/Chomsky)
(emphasis mine)
that little image up in the left hand corner links to very brief news item in todays local fishwrap
re recent appearance by one time presidential candidate R. Nader. Whilst perusing faves & doing
the occasional google search we came across this page from the Index on Censorship;
again (yah, it's no doubt tiresome of us to keep referring to these folks but they Do GOOD WORK!)
we refer you to the unholy trinity of wood s lot, BookNotes, and Ethel the Blog,
definitely three sites providing opportunity for simultaneous entertainment, education & edification,
all you have to do is invest a wee bit of your time and intellect...
while we're at it this Am, we'll include this set
of links from the Institute for Public Accuracy;
we won't be going on & on here, because the weight of all this is getting to me a bit and I want
to go out and
play for a little while, get my mind off of the painful reality that the majority of people
who should be reading these things and increasing their awareness of the precariousness of
our position are too busy digging their heads further into the sand whilst
simultaneously singing God Bless America and waving Old Glory;
whew... everyday we have to ask ourself, We in it for the long haul or what?
now now binkie, you know they've lied to us before, can we trust them now?
speaking of trust, can we trust them to do the right thing when it comes to this
okayokayokay, datz 'bout all we can handle, got to get outdoors for a bit,
but just a friendly reminder from the ol'siverback hisowndamnself,
we better all be paying attention, and be prepared to do so for a long time...

never have swung w/the popular crowd...
so no reason to start now. This may be just the beginning of a very long ramble thru the briars &
decaying woods that make up my greymatter these days. i'm aware of a particular kind of emotional
frailty & tenderness still, haven't altogether regained the balance i'd hoped for when i went on my
little holiday recently, i mean, all it took was reading the story in a magazine about people coming
by a firehouse in NYC to drop off things, pay their respects and the sentence read "she had brought
them some flowers to liven things up in the firehouse and said thank you and then began to cry" and,
ohhhshit, then i did too and i'm just fucking tired of it in a way, but am being patient with myself,
attempting to stay on top of it, you know, occasionally being physical and playing some ball, riding
the bike, long walks, watching the A's & Yankees, making yummy stuff in the kitchen, reading
(and trying to stay w/quality fiction as far as that's concerned).
Watched el residente in action last night and most of you, the regular visitors at least, are aware of
my lack of fondness & respect for the individual posing as Chief Executive. The reported fact of the size
of his mandate (is that a mandate in your pocket or are you just happy to see us...) as determined by the
pollsters is absolutely dismaying, but that can be largely accounted for the fact that the majority of us
fully intend to remain comfortably stupid about the whole thing, and the major news reporting apparatus
out there is basically nothing more than a propaganda machine for the administration. There are alternative
news sources out there, many people working hard to be sure we have some balanced and unbiased reportage, but
you have got to seek it out, you've got to make that sort of uncomfortable bargain w/reality that what you may
read could upset your day, week, whatever, but you choose that rather than remaining powerlessly ignorant. It was encouraging to see a couple of reporters lob something a bit more substantial than the usual softball towards el residente (& boy would i like to send some serious cheese his way) yet ultimately dismaying to watch him bray and shout, couching his replies in the same comfortable cliches we have been hearing all along. oh my, i was thinking to myowndamnself, we are really in for it with this guy, and he feels he's got the power because all the polls tell him so. goddam...
yourstruly has to get his sweet brown butt in gear and get to the j-o-b,
but i think i'll likely be back here sometime over the weekend, i feel it's
essential for me to remain aware & attentive to what is going on here, what is
happening to this country and this world, voice my opinion and share it, encourage
some of you to do the same, contribute to the exchange of ideas and create a dialog
an active and responsible dialog, in the hope that something more positive begins to
take shape. yahhhh, damn, that juggernaut has developed plenty of momentum and it is
highly unlikely that the voice of a few hundred thousand contrarians is going to change
anything, but in the L O N G view, if we can keep this shit up, help contribute & encourage
increasing awareness of the possibilities that exist for alternative means of affecting the
world at large, the roots of "e v i l", well, can you think of anything more worthwhile?

re GWB's press conference:
I understand this is an unconventional war. It's a different kind of war. It's not the kind of war we're used to in America. The greatest generation was used to storming beachheads. Baby boomers such as myself was used to getting caught in a quagmire of Vietnam where politics made decisions more than the military sometimes. Generation X was able to watch technology right in front of their TV screens, you know, burrow into concrete bunkers in Iraq and blow them up

regular visitors may recall the previous episode of jp & Mrs. Guy Richie, & altho the details
of last night's adventure do not possess the clarity of the first, we'll relate it to you nevertheless:
ourowndamnself & pal of the male persuasion are sauntering about the halls of a museum,
perhaps one of those tres chic retail establishments that offer up a museum-like ambiance,
he on a cell phone a step or two behind me & as we amble thru the passageways i'm aware of
bits and snippets of his conversation, the name Lourdes pops up now and again along with
"oh, well we'll be at my place in a little while, you can ask him there" or something like...
change of scene & we're in very high ceilinged chez whomever, partaking of buffet, there are
some other folk around, it's a bit like a little party or luncheon, and i am turning around to
find out why there's such a racket being made in part of the room and Madonna herowndamself
(w/little kinder Lourdes in tow) has made her entrance. I have this feeling they are looking for
yourstruly and go seeking the friend who accompanied us earlier whilst in the "museum of dream",
intending to take his dumbass aside and inquire, "what da fugg is goin' on, you great waste of space..."
i am then in a bedroom (whoa- hold on there lassie!) and spill my glass of (what else?) champagne,
am on my knees trying to clean up the mess i've made when in come my friend, Mrs. Richie & the kid
and begin to engage me in conversation. It seems Mr. & Mrs. Richie are at loggerheads, she has caught
the unfortunate fellow in a somewhat compromising position & "just won't stand for it".
Turns out she needs a place to stay, and my friend (but perhaps friend no longer whoever the hell he is)
has suggested that she look into staying with yourstruly. Now, ordinarily (is there such a thing in dreamtime?)
our royal personage would have no difficulty w/this, perhaps be all too happy to have
Ms. Thing herowndamself as his houseguest, but what's going on in my mind at this moment is
(& we kid you not) "damn, i left the sex toys all over the house..."
it's Lourdes we're concerned about, you see, so i worry myself right outta that dream.
oh, & wait till i tell ya 'bout the dream where i'm mistaken for johnny depp...

something between regret and not regretting...
speaking frankly, i don't know what i am doing, and am not certain of where this is going,
nor for how long it may continue, if it continues at all. Those of you who come and visit
here on any kind of regular basis, well, Thanks, i appreciate it very much, & it isn't that
i feel i owe anyone an explanation, but perhaps i am trying to wrap my mind around what it is
that i am/have been experiencing. It was really nice to get away for awhile, and could've been
nicer with a little more time available to do some more of the things i desired to do. I did
fulfill my primary desire of how and with whom i wanted to enjoy this little holiday with, so I
am glad for that. It's possible i could spend some time here telling you about my experiences at
the airports coming & going, the things that i observed during the days i was away from "here",
the kinds of things that i pondered over upon having observed some of those things, lived thru
those experiences, but i think i'd be boring you, and just prattling on in some sense, bloggily...
I do want to make note of a couple of things that have come to my attention since i've returned,
Happy Anniversary to Mark at wood s lot; make some small note of the passing of John Lilly;
for now i'll also include a sunday smorgasbord of linkage, items various & sundry:
the newsland portal; a story about a man, a dog, & dogfood; some sparky silliness;
from Ravenna Press, Snow Monkey; visit this gallery, brought to you by the fine minds
at attrition.org; next, another gallery, many bounteous beauties, Painted Goddesses;
this poetry related NYT link shamelessly cadged from the above mentioned wood s lot
oh how bleak this life of mine would be, if not for poets & their poetry...
lastly, a couple of things to read & ponder upon,
a segue into yesterdays Poetry Daily selection;
perhaps it's time for some of us to drop the banana...

yourstruly returned from the desert southwest w/many packages of yummy goodness,
small items of a swag-ish nature that we would be all too happy to share.
some of you have already provided us w/a snailmail address to send such things to,
so you shouldn't be surprised to find a package from ourowndarnself in your mail soon,
if some of the rest of you would be interested in receiving sumyummy left coast goodness
drop us a line & say Hi, How ya doin'? & include an address, which we will not share, sell
or otherwise give one any cause for regret in sending that the dumbmonkey's way...

el chango tonto esta en vacacion...
Two Words:
homemade tortillas
& besides that, we seriously considering changing the name of this little endeavour to
el platillo volador...
am always experiencing mixed emotions upon returning to the desert southwest for a visit,
many good memories, certainly outweighing those of a more negative nature. Interesting to
run into relatives that one hasn't seen in many years and discovering the vast distance of separation between us mostly due to my choice to live in the S.F. Bay Area instead of
remaining here at the foot of the Franklin Mountains. The Momz & Popz & ourowndamself are
heading up to the Lincoln Nat'l Forest in N.M. for a couple of days in the shade of the cool pines, altho we have had a couple of days of overcast skies here and temps much lower than usual, quite cloudy outside at the moment but no real hint of rain or a desert thunderstorm (which would be a real treat as far as the d'monkey's concerned).
we not about to begin to believe that ennybuddy out dere be missing their daily dose
of d'monkey, as there still be plenty to peruse at the various and sundry other efforts by the fine minds we enjoy readin', 'tho we be doing much catching up upon return to chez d'monkey sometime next week. Be sure to visit the usual suspects, we put a bunch of our faves in places we have been mentioning here for a bit,
and will mention once again, so go on, get outta here and go read something worthwhile:
l'alliance
les autres
& oh yahhhh, wotdahell,
let's give our own horn another good toot,
last months monkey-biz
hasta lluego, mis amigos, y que te vaya bien...
