for current monkey biz go HERE

2.21: ouch, that was painful...
el lobo getting back on his feet,
may be a little too sensitive to things these daze...
but we had to take note of the passing of Balthus
N.Y. Times' obituary here, L.A. Times' here
I daresay he painted more than portrayals of
"adolescent girls & their sexual awakening"
but that sells papers I suppose.
Yours truly invites you to see for yourself,
& will include a number of links for your perusal below:
from Mark Harden's Artchive, Balthus on the web;
from Artcyclopedia, Balthus;
Balthus from Le Monde du Arts (French);
from Italy's Net-Art, Balthus, La reincarnazione della pittura;
NYT, again, review & excerpt from '99 biography, Balthus;
an appreciation from The New Criterion;
a letter, from Rilke to Balthus;
some miscellaneous images:
nude with cat;
the street, (from this group of images);
Therese;
nude with arms raised
la leçon de guitare ;
lastly, this self portrait

2.20: remember a w is an m upside down,
& m stands for moron

& now for something a little big different...

~ ~ ~
2.19: fighting off a case of the blues/blahs...
mil gracias a mi amiga, la reina del sur, para esta cosa aqui;
(mr. jensen's heart & mind in the right place...)
& while we at it for this briefest of moments, this item
(which yours truly initially read about in Liz Smith's gossip column),
from The American Prospect, where you'll find more great stuff like this
ciao, amici mio...

~ ~ ~
2.18: Sunday Shakespearean Sonnet Smorgasbord
a longing to kiss thy face...
on friday, a dear friend posited the following to me:
Because J., this is something I wonder about all the time, and I must be truthful with you,
sometimes I sit and cry to think that the depth others feel is a depth I have never reached
and often think I won't ever. But then I think there really isn't a depth that deep,
it's all either A) in my head, or B) in that silly romance novel...or in movie...
but then I follow that up with a wonder about why, if there ISN'T that sort of thing,
how did they ever know about it to write about it?

amiga mia, yours truly would be dishonest in attempting to have you believe I have
any more insight on this matter than yourself, & each of us, having such vastly differing
histories & experiences, would relate some individual "truth" in attempting to respond.
my canon, intellectually & educationally speaking, is best described as western, so likely
i'll begin there, to seek a place to begin a small examination of the beguiling mystery of love.
I'll begin this little tour w/an item taken from the N.Y.T., May '98, "the Aspects of Love"
next, simply & without embellishment or any interpretation, the Sonnets by W. Shakespeare
now, for those of you desiring to examine Shakespeare's sonnets more closely,
the Sonnets, from allshakespere.com; Shake-Spears Sonnets from sirbacon.org;
an introductory course to the Sonnets, originally available through
the Open University of B.C. & University of Victoria;
un petit rappel: sonnets are simply a poetic form & written by many others,
we include a few examples here, here, & here.
yes, I know, we're no closer to an answer than we were before, but stay near,
we'll together examine again the inquiry, seek out some hard won nugget of truth,
if one's there to be found.
I leave you w/this little folly, so you can write us a sonnet...
and this special little reward for those who've patiently waded thru all this...
Venus + Adonis

2.16: hmmmmm, do these pants make my butt look fat?
Vanity dies hard; in some obstinate cases it outlives the man.

ahhhhhhh, the weekend approacheth, & a slightly longer one for many of us,
this does, unfortunately exclude some dear friends, relegated to life in the hinterlands
where even federally mandated holidaze are ignored, & we feel awful about that, just awful...
Yours truly intends to focus a little today on the issue of male vanity but we ask your
indulgence for a brief moment or two, while we include news of a more pressing & important nature:
First, this news re concerns about el presidente's initial political decision, this from the SF Chron,
and this related item comes from Reuters, via the NYT. Speak up now, let them know we are paying
attention, and drop a line to your congressman & senator, their addresses may be found here
Next up on this morning's agenda, a laundry list of items:
Sorry Rudy G- You have no right, so keep your goddam opinion to yourself;
In Peru, a very interesting anthropological discovery;
two items on Steven Soderbergh:
watching movies w/Steve from the NYT;
& as he's nominated as Best Director for two films, this opinion from Slate;
and we take this moment to state that opinions expressed in linkage posted here are
NOT those of the furry mammal responsible for all the other crapola you have to wade thru...

okayokayokay, nearly done w/the laundry list, we get to vanity shortly:
Too Much Soda Pop!!!!
from the NYT, ms NBC & CNN;
& FYI, The Lancet has the study published on line,
altho you do have to register, but it is free

vanity, vanity, all is vanity yours truly doesn't consider himself terribly vain,
but we indulge in long hair (hasn't been cut in 3+ years),
wear a "soul patch" and have a penchant for one-of-a-kind shirts, singular prints, unusual "hawaiian" kinda things,
so you might say I possess some degree of vanity...
on that subject then, this Fortune piece from '96,
a couple of book reviews, this from Slate & this from the NYT
re hair, men's in particular, the long and the short of it
(oh, & incidentally, that long hair link comes from this site)
jessferdahalibut, we include this
brief history of Saville Row
and by no means have we exhausted the subject,
go, do yr own google search on "male vanity"
wear yourself out...
one last item today, in the spirit of "lighten up Dude",
Nick Park & the gang at Aardman Animation have long been
faves of ours, and we were literally overjoyed to find
Creature Comforts online @ Atom Films
IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE WHEN YOU VISIT HERE,
Watch Creature Comforts!
essspacce...., I need esspacce....

2.13: why show business is like politics...
from the L.A. Times; Lies, Lying, and Liars
and No, yours truly has not overlooked stated intent to needle el presidente
& provide reminders to all & sundry of the buffoon/ary extant in la casablanca:
Hitchens on why dubya can't read
& for good measure,
short attention span, dyslexia & blessed ignorance
el presidente's idea of a work day

for the chocoholics amidst us...
courtesy Slate, a chocolate tasting test
and in re another kind of pleasure altogether,
(& because tomorrow's u-know-what day):
Blindside, erotica for the visually impaired
altho am not at all sure what you can do about those hairy palms...

and the nominees are...
announced this morning,
by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences;
& here are some related links for your pleasure:
Variety's Academy Central;
Oscarwatch.com;
there's a whiff of the mercenary at hsx.com;
Inside.com
no doubt every cinema site out there will have something related,
and that will include our very own movielover, as soon as we can get him
distracted enough that he'll leave that poor gal's butt alone & get to work...
pssssst.... i am winking right back at ya...

2.12: itzacoldannawettaouttaheah
yah, boye....    a largely wet weekend, some occasional showers on Sat & Sun,
but rainy from the get-go this Am. Fine Fun All-star stuff on display yesterday afternoon,
w/the Eastern Conference All-Stars coming back from 21 points down to win by 1.
(the dunk-a-thon stunk up the house tho, B O R I N G !)

and knowing that, am feeling pretty damn good about myowndamnself...

couldn't sleep, up early & messing w/stuff...
hoping yours truly has not inadverdently 'caused very forgiving pal of ours
any grief, 'cuz we know she got enough to deal w/out there...

a little conversation w/Darren Aronofsky, director of Pi
(actually the symbol for Pi should go there but i canna find one to use)
& Requiem for a Dream
official sites here: Pi; Requiem for a Dream
Oscar nominations being announced tomorrow, yours truly not overly excited by this
but you're likely to find something soon at the movielover page commenting about the
nominations, Nicholson in The Pledge, & some other cinema related stuff...
fair warning now, we'll be back later...

~ ~ ~
yummy feta & spinach croissant avec un latte

certainly one of the burning issues of our time:
Pop or Soda;
more cartoony goodness:
Space Moose;
great heaping amounts of silliness abound at
the comedy lab
& then this last little odd item,
something that showed up in the lobomail box:
the mystic pixel
forgive us, we cannot help ourselves sometimes,
j. buckley & his guitar, live, from some years ago

~ ~ ~
2.8: allowing myowndamnself brief respite from Bush watch...
allow us to introduce the Rev. Al Green

Strong As Death, Sweet As Love

oh hell, i canna resist...
el presidente's palm helper
w/a hearty "Domo arigato" to GMT + 9

~ ~ ~
2.6: yours truly is asking you to pay careful attention now,
bend over now, this won't hurt a bit...
particularly to this bullshit re Tax Cut proposed by el presidente...

I wrote about my intentions to put together a great rant/hissyfit that'd be posted here but have
reconsidered somewhat, a large part of the intended diatribe had to do w/ourselves as energy hogs,
particularly those amongst us w/penchant for owning/driving the latest & shiniest in Behemoth
technology, no matter that the farthest off-road they would ever get is likely to be that spot of dirt
in the unpaved portion of the new shopping mall out on Rte 69. Oh, but that was only part of it, I had
the intention of going on about this wasteful consumer culture, the crap we are being force-fed via
the tv we watch, the newspapers and magazines we read, the advertising that is corrupting us w/desire
for crap, crap, crap & MORE CRAP. TURN IT OFF, I intended to shout,
STOP BUYING THE CRAP I wanted to scream.....     & then
sometime over the weekend yours truly realized how hopeless my endeavor is
but instead of spinning downward descending into the bluefunk of unhappiness
where i have already spent way too much time of late, thankyewvurrymuch
I was allowed the company of a couple of friends whose support buoyed my spirits enough
that the need to vent & rant passed, at least for the moment, & via this particular venue...
SO- pardon the digression, but here we get back to the subject we originally intended to address:
first a bit of backround from The Financial Times;
this item from a little while back, but scarily prescient;
something fairly recent from Citizens for Tax Justice;
a Mr. S. Burns weighs in w/his opinion;
something of an overview on recent broadcast media reporting on the tax cut issue;
numbers, numbers, numbers: an economist's look at numbers juggling.
yesss, agreed, yours truly is going on too long about this for some of our more
attention-span impaired perusers so we wrap this Am's howl session w/these last couple of items
(by the way, be sure to click on el presidente up there)
first, you gotta remember that so far, they are a little better organized so we
point you (once again) to these links: Write your Senator;
Write your Congressperson; Write to el presidente (tho he'll not listen);
& tell your friends, family, co-workers, all the various & sundry folk in your lives to pay attention...
just a couple of leftover links, for good measure (jp always gives good count....):
Tax Planet
in re to another very scary plan of el presidente's
Behemoth owner in your neighborhood driving you crazy??? FYI
and to those truly optimistic ones out there, those of you raising kinder
don't let your babies grow up to be g.w. bush

~ ~ ~
2.5: later that same morning, & still in the mood...
the problem w/being a moron & a dunderhead
i'd be wishing someone'd type up a resignation to put in front of him
but then we'd have a dangerous asshole in his spot instead...

in the mood for a quickie, are you?
yah, right, getouttaheah...
the esteemed Molly Ivins, courtesy the fine minds at Backup Brain;
saludos a mi hermanito K! followed thru on some linkage we posted here recently
and came right back at me to point out this site & these items in particular;
this to show we no johnny-come-lately
(s'matter o'fact, we more like a johnnycomelastly...)
and as reminder to make regular visits to MBRlinux
for quality linky goodness like el presidente's weblog &
(dammmn, we REALLY like this one) the supreme court bitchslap
we leave you (for now) w/humorous bit sent along from our popz:
When George W. Bush was asked whether he knew what Roe vs. Wade was,
he replied it was the decision that George Washington needed to make
when he planned for his army to cross the Delaware.

~ ~ ~
2.4: sunday smorgasbord..

yours truly would have choked Carlesimo as well,
sumbuddy please get that sucker offa nbc's nba coverage,
& Yessssssss! the commish was payink attention...
;
it's fucking haunting me right now,
& somewhat related, The Times on Bush's America;
there's a certain inevitability 'bout this,
s'only a matter of time & someone's money;
okayokayokay, so now Sister Comosellama's
no longer a prune-faced ol' hag
& in the "oh No, not again" category,
the forces of tiny-minds take another small victory
enough of this for now, it's off to brekkie on a lovely sunday morn...

~ ~ ~
2.3: oooohLaLa...
college hoops at it's finest!
UCLA beats Stanford (previously undefeated), 79-73
March Madness is comink!

yours truly is still seeking...
my depraved lifestyle occasionally leaves me adrift & longing...
so this seems of some interest, possibly of some value
& if i was a truly generous man, i'd send a copy to el presidente
but i'm afraid the dolt wouldn't bother to read it, let alone comprehend it...
oh yeah, while i'm at it, go read this

choose to be informed, not ignorant

seven sites to start your saturday
cabinet
surprise
subterranean notes
diary of a slut
scherzi & sospiri
more like this
no surrender

yours truly was a very happy fella yesterday...
when upon arriving home from long day on the killing floor at the SFChron
we discovered an email message containing this link which,
if you are a recent visitor, relates to lobo loco of 1.26 re that memo
My thanks to BG for providing the link.
It's up to the rest of us to keep paying attention...

2.1: be back to clean up this mess later, but for now,
jp's in love w/a shiny blue grasshopper..

por quoi? you may be asking,
well, there's this:
Presidents' Day is coming up on February 19. In honor of our current President, please make a donation (however small) to a pro-choice organization, like Planned Parenthood. Then send a card to Bush saying: "President Bush, a donation has been made in your name to Planned Parenthood." And please forward this to your friends, family, co-workers, etc.
so hie thyselves to the shiny blue grasshopper for all the details
and the relevant addresses,
and join in, because Yours Truly will be doing it....
